We are delighted to celebrate Cheryl Footer as Physiopedia’s Top Contributor for May! From paediatric neurological physiotherapy to international workforce development, Cheryl’s career reflects a lifelong dedication to improving rehabilitation worldwide.

Since joining the team in 2021, she has played a key role in developing the International Rehabilitation Education and Training Toolkit (IRETT) through the ReLAB-HS activity, strengthening rehabilitation education and collaboration across continents.

Join us as Cheryl shares her journey, her passion for global health equity, and how the Physiopedia community continues to inspire her work.

Where did you go to university/college?

I did my Bachelors in Exercise Science at Occidental College in California (1987), my Masters in Physical Therapy (1990) and my PhD in Physical Therapy also University of Miami in Florida (1999).

Where do you work?

I am currently semi-retired from both clinical practice and academia, following a career that spanned diverse roles and settings. My professional journey began as a staff physical therapist with Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida, before founding the Children’s Physiotherapy Alliance in Colorado. I went on to hold academic positions including Assistant Professor at the University of Miami, Assistant Dean at Regis University, and Clinical Associate Professor at Baylor University. Beyond my work in the United States, I also served on the Rehabilitation Steering Committee for Health Volunteers Overseas, contributing to global rehabilitation initiatives.

Describe your role
I consider myself to be a peadiatric neuro physical therapist. In my role as a workforce development specialist I have been part of the team that has developed the IRETT as part of the ReLAB-HS activity.

What are some of the more challenging aspects about your work?
Time Zones. Coordinating work in every time zone imaginable is quite challenging…but doable. Flexibility and commitment to the mission are the keys to strengthening rehabilitation globally.

What are some of your professional passions?
Improving rehabilitation in global health systems is my personal mission.

I love being a mother to my 3 boys. No two days are ever alike, which is just the way life should be. Always an adventure!

What would be your advice to a newly graduating occupational therapist, physiotherapist or professional?
Love what you do every day. Share your passion. Find ways to give back to others, even when you do not think you have anything to offer – you have knowledge and passion to share to better another person’s life.

What are the best things about being part of the Physiopedia team?
The inter-professional teamwork as already mentioned. The degree of professionalism and commitment to rehabilitation around the world is unrivalled and sets the exemplar for all others to follow.

How has being a Physiopedia team member helped your professional development/career progression?
I have found new respect for the strengths and challenges of bringing education to the world. I am especially humbled by the Physiopedia’s commitment to advance rehabilitation in low-income countries.

What are your hopes and aspirations for Physiopedia?
Physiopedia has grown tremendously over the past 5 years. I am excited about the IRETT  that will transform rehabilitation education worldwide.

Anything else you would like to share?
I am so thankful to have been part of the Physiopedia team and have tremendous gratitude toward Rachael and Tony for allowing me to be part of the team.
