Physical therapy and occupational therapy students in Ukraine are building essential clinical skills through Physiopedia Plus, demonstrating how global collaboration can transform rehabilitation education even in challenging circumstances. This successful initiative highlights Physiopedia’s commitment to making rehabilitation knowledge accessible worldwide, particularly in regions facing significant healthcare challenges.
Students from Poltava State Medical University studying Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy have recently completed a specialised course on “Practical Guidelines for Strengthening the Hip and Knee Joints” through Physiopedia Plus. These enthusiastic learners proudly shared photos displaying their achievement certificates, a moment of celebration amidst their rigorous healthcare education journey.
The knowledge gained through this course has already been integrated into their formal studies, specifically when learning about “Exercises for Balance Training” within their Therapeutic Exercises curriculum. This practical knowledge will prove invaluable to these future physical rehabilitation and occupational therapy professionals as they develop their clinical expertise.
The access to Physiopedia Plus for these students is provided through the Rehab4U project via their university library. This forms part of a broader initiative responding to Ukraine’s critical rehabilitation needs. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, over 250,000 people annually require physical rehabilitation due to the ongoing conflict, creating unprecedented demand for rehabilitation services while the healthcare system faces significant challenges in governance, financing and service delivery.
The Rehab4U project, implemented by Momentum Wheels for Humanity, aims to establish a resilient rehabilitation system. Physiopedia is part of this important project providing access to Plus for people in Ukraine to strengthen their ongoing professional development. The project works toward strengthening governance and expanding access to services.
As part of previous work with Momentum Wheels for Humanity, Physiopedia has created specialised programmes including Rehabilitation in Disaster and Conflict, Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation of Displaced Persons, Select Complex Injuries and Multi System Conditions, and Introduction to the General Management of Patients with Burns. Additional courses addressing specific clinical needs such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, amputee rehabilitation and stroke are also available and being translated into Ukrainian.
This initiative demonstrates how Physiopedia’s global mission to provide universal access to rehabilitation knowledge creates real impact in challenging circumstances. By connecting Ukrainian rehabilitation students and professionals to worldwide expertise and resources, Physiopedia is helping build capacity in a healthcare system facing extraordinary demands while preparing the next generation of practitioners with essential skills.
The success of these students represents a powerful example of how global collaboration in rehabilitation education can transcend borders and conflict to improve healthcare delivery and ultimately patient outcomes in Ukraine and beyond.
