World Cerebral Palsy Day on 6 October celebrates the fact that every person with cerebral palsy has their own experiences and priorities, and that those voices are stronger together. As a Physiopedia Plus (Plus) member, you can explore how that same idea sits at the heart of good multidisciplinary care through the Cerebral Palsy Programme.
World Cerebral Palsy Day is a global movement for and by the 50 million people living with cerebral palsy, their families and supporters. This year’s theme #UniqueANDUnited is about bringing individual voices together, turning personal ideas for change into a collective call for a more inclusive world.
It’s a theme that speaks directly to those of us who work in rehabilitation. Cerebral palsy is the most common lifelong physical disability, yet it remains one of the most underfunded and overlooked issues in disability and global health. Many people living with cerebral palsy face barriers ranging from a lack of access to healthcare and education to social exclusion and discrimination in employment. And while it is caused by an injury to the developing brain, every individual’s experience of it is different. Some people need lifelong support while others live independently. No single profession can meet that range of needs alone.
Recognising what makes each person’s experience unique starts with understanding the full picture. The Plus Cerebral Palsy Programme (available to all Plus members on a Full or Pro subscription) builds that foundation through courses on aetiology and pathology, motor development principles and paediatric musculoskeletal development, before moving into physiotherapy assessment and intervention across the full spectrum of motor function. The programme also looks beyond movement. Courses on cerebral visual impairment, sensory integration, mental health considerations and the multisystem impact of cerebral palsy help you see the whole person, including the challenges that are easy to miss in a busy clinic.
Using the ICF with Cerebral Palsy is a particularly good fit for this year’s theme. The ICF gives you a practical framework for understanding what matters most to each person and their family, so that goals reflect their priorities rather than a standard template.
If “unique” describes the people we work with, “united” describes how we work best. This programme was built around multidisciplinary practice, and it shows. Alongside physiotherapy content, you’ll find courses on communication in early intervention, augmentative and alternative communication, feeding, occupational therapy assessment and intervention, and activities of daily living. There’s also a strong practical thread through courses on adaptive seating, assistive technology standers and orthotic management in ambulant cerebral palsy. Many of these include practical demonstrations, so you can see techniques and equipment in action rather than just reading about them.
Understanding your colleagues’ roles makes you a better team member. When you know what a speech and language therapist is looking for during a feeding assessment, or how an orthotist thinks about optimising a device, your referrals become sharper and your joint goals more meaningful.
The programme is made up of 20 courses, designed to be completed in the suggested order, followed by a final reflection that evidences your learning. If you’ve already started, World Cerebral Palsy Day could be a good moment to pick it up again. When you reach your final reflection, you might consider this question: what does being unique and united look like in your own practice?
This year’s campaign invites people to share the change they want to see and tag a local leader, business or community organisation who can help make it happen. Access to healthcare is one of the most common barriers people with cerebral palsy face, which puts rehabilitation professionals in a real position to help. You can support the day by amplifying the voices of people with cerebral palsy in your networks, and by reflecting on the change you could help create in your own service. #WorldCPDay #UniqueANDUnited
