Introduction

A burn is an injury to the skin or other organic tissue primarily caused by exposure to heat or other causative agents (radiation, electricity, chemicals). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), burns are a global public health problem, accounting for an estimated 180,000 deaths annually. Burn injuries are among the leading causes of disability in low and middle-income countries. Burn injuries not only affect the skin. They can also affect tissue, organ and system networks and have significant psychological effects. This course will take you through the different types of burn injuries and explore how to classify burns by size and depth.
