Introduction

Global health aims to promote health and prevent and treat diseases globally. It transcends geographical, national and cultural boundaries by targeting populations in all countries. However, there is no universally accepted definition of global health, and our concept of global health has shifted over the years. There are also many interconnected factors and determinants that affect individual and global health. As will be discussed in this course, we must understand and examine these factors in order to systematically address them.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify at least two ways our concept of global health has changed over time and the distinction between global health, international health and public health
  • discuss how global health has been defined and conceptualised in recent literature
  • describe at least three interconnected systems that affect health and two determinants of health
