Introduction

Burn injuries are a significant global health challenge, causing an estimated 180,000 deaths per year. Non-fatal burn injuries can profoundly impact an individual's physical, emotional and social well-being. Effective burn injury management requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach, with rehabilitation professionals playing an important role. This course introduces complications associated with burns, such as pain, pruritus, oedema and hypertrophic scarring, and their management strategies. It also provides a brief overview of the surgical management of burn injuries.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• discuss key aspects of pain, oedema, scar and surgical management for burn injuries, focusing on common complications and symptoms and the evidence base for treatment strategies
• select an appropriate intervention for an individual with a burn injury in a given case scenario

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
