Introduction

The nervous system is directly responsible for what makes you "you" - managing life functions, coordinating movement, monitoring surroundings, and enabling communication, memories, and emotions. Understanding this complex electrochemical network, from single nerve cells to entire neuronal systems, provides rehabilitation professionals with powerful tools for identifying appropriate interventions and guiding care plans. This course explores the nervous system from nerve level through peripheral and central systems, covering action potentials, neurotransmitters, and clinical applications of motor and sensory function.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the basic structure and function of neurons, including neuronal communication physiology
  • compare spinal and cranial nerve structure and function
  • discuss the major differences between sensory, motor, and mixed nerves
  • describe the major structures and functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and how they interact with each other as part of a greater neuronal network

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers.
