The critical role of red flag screening
When assessing a patient, identifying red flags is a vital aspect of physiotherapy practice, essential for ensuring patient safety and for selecting the appropriate care pathway. While screening guidelines exist, remembering all the details and applying them in real-world clinical situations – particularly when working alone or in settings with limited immediate access to medical support – can be challenging. The PAI ‘Red Flag Check’ task aims to support clinicians develop their knowledge and confidence in this key aspect of patient assessment.
How PAI’s “Red Flag Check” works
The PAI Red Flag Check task transforms complex clinical screening into a guided, systematic process. Either you can request the Red flag check Task and be guided through the process of obtaining and sharing the required patient details with PAI, or you can request this task during any ongoing patient-related conversation with PAI. When the task is requested PAI will check it has sufficient information and if necessary will prompt you for more details to improve the reliability of its response. Finally, working collaboratively with you, PAI will help you build a comprehensive red flag analysis, exploring levels of urgency and the options available, and prompting you to consider what other information could further refine your reasoning.
Important! The Red flag check task serves as a structured screening tool to support (not replace) your clinical judgment. It helps you develop the habit of gathering all relevant patient information and considering all key risk factors, building your confidence and competence in clinical screening.
Sarah uses the PAI red flag check task
It’s Tuesday morning, and Sarah has an unexpected walk-in patient complaining of worsening back pain. While taking the history, something doesn’t feel quite right about the presentation. She opens the Plus app on her phone, clicks on PAI and activates the Red Flag Check task. PAI responds by identifying key information to gather to run this check. As she talks with her patient, she dictates key findings to PAI. PAI then guides Sarah through the key risk factors to consider, prompting her to reflect on the findings and what they might indicate. Working through the process with PAI, Sarah feels confident in her own clinical reasoning, supported by a systematic, evidence-based approach to screening.
