From Student to Leader: Candace’s Journey with Physiopedia

From Malaysian physiotherapy student to hospital leader, Candace’s clinical skills and professional growth have been closely tied to her commitment to the Physiopedia global community and shows how online collaboration opens doors for healthcare professionals worldwide.

Candace’s journey with Physiopedia began in 2016 during her third year as a physiotherapy undergraduate in Malaysia, marking the start of a transformative experience that would shape her career and professional development. What started with joining her first Physiopedia massive open online course (MOOC) soon evolved into Physiopedia becoming her primary resource for knowledge throughout her studies and early career.

After completing her degree in 2018, Candace began working at a community stroke rehabilitation centre. As a new graduate seeking continuing professional development, Candace joined the Physiopedia Volunteer Orientation Course (VOC). Physiopedia offered the ideal platform to connect with physiotherapists worldwide. As a committed volunteer, gaining access to her Physiopedia Plus account to support her professional development was a pivotal moment, leading to 6 years of dedicated service as a volunteer content editor where she has contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Physiopedia community.

Volunteering with Physiopedia has been a transformative experience for Candace. Beyond gaining clinical knowledge, she has developed skills in writing, editing, technology, communication and teamwork. But more importantly, through her work with Physiopedia, she has come to understand that true leadership is about positively influencing others through respectful engagement. Today, she leads the physiotherapy unit at a district hospital in Beaufort, Malaysia, and has recently completed a master’s degree in stroke rehabilitation. The support and guidance of the Physiopedia community have been instrumental in her academic and professional growth, particularly through clinical discussions and research collaborations.

Engaging with a multinational group of professionals has broadened Candace’s perspectives, complemented by guidance from her supportive supervisor. Her participation in the recent implementation science program and journal club provided essential feedback, enhancing her research and presentation skills. These experiences culminated in a significant achievement: presenting her findings at the 7th Ministry of Health Physiotherapy Conference in Malaysia, where she was honoured with first place. Despite initial nerves about her first in-person presentation since beginning her master’s program, Candace found confidence and calm by applying strategies for overcoming impostor syndrome, a topic that the team discussed in Physiopedia’s monthly meetings.

For Candace, being part of the volunteer community has been both exciting and rewarding. She admires the team’s dedication to creating accessible, high-quality content for anyone, anywhere. Her belief in Physiopedia’s mission fuels hope for the community’s continued growth and positive impact through rehabilitation education.
