Last month we launched the “Tasks” feature of the Physiopedia AI Assistant (PAI) and have been exploring each task option in more detail. This article focuses on another transformative tool in the PAI toolkit: the Patient Education Guide task.

The importance of patient education
Effective patient education is a cornerstone of successful physiotherapy practice. When patients understand their condition, treatment rationale and self-management strategies, they’re more likely to adhere to rehabilitation programs and achieve better outcomes. However, the reality in most clinical settings is that patient education is generic in nature, consisting of standard leaflets and links to existing websites that broadly cover conditions but aren’t tailored to the individual patient situation and goals.
Despite evidence that personalised education improves patient outcomes, the time restrictions faced by busy clinicians make creating individualised materials virtually impossible in day-to-day practice. As a result, even while recognising the limitations of generic resources, clinicians have no practical alternative.
Creating effective patient education materials is very challenging for several reasons:
- Translating complex anatomical and physiological concepts into patient-friendly language requires significant time and skill. Technical terminology that comes naturally to clinicians often needs careful simplification without losing accuracy or essential details. This becomes even more challenging when working with patients of varying educational backgrounds, health literacy levels or when English isn’t their first language.
- Ideally personalised education material would directly address the patient’s circumstances, specific condition, individual concerns and ultimate goals.
- Finally, keeping educational content evidence-based and up-to-date requires constant vigilance as research evolves. In many cases clinicians find themselves using outdated materials simply because they lack the time to revise them with the latest evidence and best practices.
From generic handouts to personalised educational resources and conversations
How PAI’s “Patient Education Guide” task works
The PAI Patient Education Guide task works with you to develop personalised, patient-friendly educational materials that you can use to guide and structure your patient education conversations. As you discuss a clinical presentation with PAI, such as diagnosis information, individual goals and treatment plans, the AI assistant captures the key clinical concepts that need explanation and how these relate to this individual patient’s needs.
When you request the Patient Education Guide task, PAI analyses the clinical information shared during your conversation and translates it into clear, accessible language appropriate for patient education. The guide typically includes sections explaining the condition or injury, relevant anatomy in simplified terms, treatment rationale and answers to common questions.
What sets this task apart is its ability to tailor the educational content to the specific patient context you’ve described. Rather than generic information about a condition, PAI can help you develop rich personalised guides that address the particular presentation, concerns and goals you’ve discussed. This is especially valuable where there are communication challenges; whether related to language, cultural background or health literacy; as the reading level, terminology and level of detail can all be refined through simple follow-up requests, giving you a resource that genuinely supports the conversation you need to have with your patient.
Aisha uses the PAI Patient Education Guide task
It’s Monday morning and physiotherapist Aisha has just completed an initial assessment with a patient presenting with plantar fasciitis who has significant anxiety about their diagnosis after reading alarming information online. The patient has asked numerous questions about their condition, prognosis and treatment options.
Aisha knows that providing clear, accurate information will be crucial for alleviating the patient’s concerns and ensuring treatment adherence. Between appointments, she opens the Plus app on her phone, initiates a conversation with PAI about the case, describing the presentation, concerns and the treatment approach she’s planning.
After sharing these details, Aisha requests the Patient Education Guide task. Working with PAI, she develops a comprehensive but accessible explanation of plantar fasciitis covering what causes the condition, why it’s painful, how physiotherapy helps, self-management strategies and realistic recovery expectations.
Aisha reviews the draft with PAI and asks it to ‘simplify the anatomy explanation further and add more detail about pain management techniques.’ The refined guide gives her a clear, structured resource she can use as in her next conversation with the patient. Walking through it together section by section, addressing the specific concerns and misinformation the patient had encountered, and reinforcing the treatment plan in language her patient can understand.
