Introduction

Cognition encompasses mental processes, including attention, memory, problem-solving, reasoning, planning, and communication abilities. While typically managed by speech therapists and occupational therapists, all care team members need a basic understanding of cognition and cognitive deficits to enable effective patient communication and comprehensive care planning. This course explores the neuroanatomy and neuroscience of cognition, covering functional domains including perception, attention, memory, orientation, executive functioning, and language. Clinical examples connect this learning to your clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the major neuroanatomy areas involved in cognition and their clinical applications
• discuss the clinical significance of the functional cognitive domains and how impairments can affect clinical outcomes
• describe commonly encountered cognitive clinical assessment techniques

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

• Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 2.5-3 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
