This course is part of a programme:

Introduction

Balance loss after stroke is a leading driver of falls, reduced independence, and fear-driven inactivity, yet many clinicians default to a single screening score without asking which underlying skill is actually impaired. This course helps clinicians move beyond a summary score to pinpoint whether a patient's balance deficit stems from awareness, sensation, motor control, or endurance. By assessing sitting and standing balance systematically, and grading tests to reveal sensory reliance, dual-task cost, and fatigue effects, clinicians can build more precise, person-centred plans of care that reduce fall risk without over-restricting activity.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe sitting and standing balance assessments after stroke, focusing on core, sitting, standing, and higher-level outcome measures
  • compare feedforward and feedback balance strategies to identify the specific skill deficit underlying a patient's presentation
  • explain how to adapt and grade a balance assessment through sensory removal, added load, distraction, or fatigue

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
