Introduction
Upper extremity impairment affects most stroke survivors, limiting the arm and hand function needed for daily activities and independence. This course translates current evidence into person-centred care across the acute-to-chronic continuum. It provides an overview of how to select assessments and evidence-based interventions to help patients regain meaningful use of the affected limb and work towards recovery goals that matter to them.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- describe standardised assessment measures used to classify severity of upper extremity impairment after stroke
- discuss the evidence base for motor, sensory, and complication-prevention interventions across the acute-to-chronic stroke recovery continuum
- apply a severity-based clinical reasoning framework to select individualised upper extremity interventions for patients following stroke
- describe the "find, facilitate, force, function and fun framework" for organising upper extremity interventions by severity of impairment
Target audience
This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
