Introduction

Clinical reasoning involves thinking and decision making in professional practice. This skill is important for rehabilitation professionals to problem solve and establish a rapport with their patients. Two types of clinical reasoning strategies often used when examining and evaluating patients are hypothetico-deductive reasoning and narrative reasoning. In this course, hypothetico-deductive reasoning will be explained with the help of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the Hypothesis-Oriented Algorithm for Clinicians-II (HOAC II) frameworks. The use of narrative reasoning to understand a patient’s unique perspective will also be explained. These reasoning strategies can be easily combined to support an efficient and patient-centred examination and evaluation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• explain two clinical reasoning frameworks and the overall importance of clinical reasoning in the examination and evaluation of patients
• discuss hypothetico-deductive reasoning as a problem-solving approach using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and Hypothesis-Oriented Algorithm for Clinicians-II (HOAC II) frameworks
• justify the role of narrative reasoning in understanding a patient’s perspectives in patient-centred care

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

We expect the required elements to take around 1.5-2 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
