Introduction

Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, affects an individual's ability to safely and effectively eat and drink. It can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia and, in severe cases, choking. Dysphagia also significantly impacts well-being, as eating and drinking are integral to social interactions and quality of life. One in six adults report difficulty swallowing, but only half seek medical attention. Optimal management requires the expertise of qualified healthcare professionals. This programme introduces rehabilitation professionals to the anatomy and physiology of swallowing, assessment of dysphagia and key rehabilitation management strategies.
