Introduction
Falls are a significant concern for individuals with mobility, balance, or sensory impairments and older adults, with nearly a third of people aged 65 and over falling each year. These falls can seriously affect a person's physical health, independence, and quality of life.
Various rehabilitation interventions are recognised for their role in fall prevention, including exercise-based programmes and compensatory approaches. This course focuses primarily on compensatory strategies, such as adapting environments, modifying tasks, and utilising assistive devices. These strategies help people work with their existing abilities to reduce their fall risk while maintaining functional independence.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- identify at least three intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for falls and at least two outcome measures used in a fall risk assessment
- describe key compensatory strategies (e.g. task modification, home modification, and assistive technology) that reduce fall risk and support engagement in meaningful daily occupations
- discuss at least two client-centred fall prevention strategies that address safety concerns and respect a person's autonomy

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
