Introduction

Communication is an essential part of human connection and well-being. Speech, language and hearing disorders can significantly impact how a person communicates, potentially causing frustration and impacting quality of life. Healthcare professionals should be able to recognise different communication and hearing conditions and adopt strategies that enhance a person's healthcare experience and outcomes. This course provides an overview of speech and language disorders commonly encountered in clinical practice, focusing on dysarthria, aphasia, apraxia of speech and hearing loss. It introduces strategies to ensure healthcare professionals are better equipped to support their patients' communication needs.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• differentiate between three common speech and language disorders (dysarthria, aphasia, and apraxia of speech)
• describe appropriate communication strategies and environmental modifications to support patients with dysarthria, aphasia, apraxia of speech and hearing loss
• explain the importance of identifying and managing hearing loss in individuals with communication disorders

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
