Introduction

Rehabilitation professionals are increasingly assuming first-contact roles. This means they are often the first healthcare provider to evaluate patients with potentially complex presentations. To ensure safe and effective practice, clinicians working in musculoskeletal practice must be able to recognise neurological pathology.

The neurological screen serves as an essential differential diagnostic tool for clinicians, helping them rule symptoms that might suggest neurological involvement in or out. This course provides a detailed guide to the neurological screen, focusing on dermatome, myotome and reflex testing. Through this learning, you'll gain practical skills that you can immediately apply in your clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss dermatome, myotome, and reflex testing and the clinical significance of these screening tests in a musculoskeletal setting
  • differentiate between upper and lower motor neuron lesions, peripheral neuropathy and individual nerve roots based on information from the neurological screen in simple case scenarios

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
