Introduction

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune condition affecting around 1% of the population. Because it is a systemic condition, it can significantly impact many body systems beyond the joints. It can cause long-term disability, pain and premature death. Early identification and implementation of appropriate pharmacological management are essential for optimal outcomes. While pharmacological management is the mainstay of treatment, rehabilitation professionals also have a role in managing this multifactorial condition.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• discuss the general epidemiology, key risk factors, clinical characteristics and basic pathophysiology of rheumatoid arthritis
• identify key lab tests and diagnostic criteria used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis
• describe common pharmacological and non-pharmacological management strategies for rheumatoid arthritis

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
