Introduction

Tilt-in-space wheelchairs are a form of complex rehabilitation technology. They do far more than simply tilt a seat. This course explores the clinical indications, biomechanical principles, and feature-matching decisions that guide appropriate prescription. Using case examples and evidence-based frameworks, learners will develop the skills to confidently match equipment to individual client needs.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • differentiate tilt-in-space wheelchair designs from other dependent manual mobility options, including transport chairs and reclining systems
  • analyse the clinical indications for tilt-in-space prescription, including pressure management, postural support, and caregiver context, to determine client candidacy
  • discuss key feature-matching principles to select appropriate tilt mechanisms and configuration options for clients with complex seating needs
  • select an appropriate tilt mechanism to support client participation in foot propulsion, feeding, and tabletop tasks

Target audience

This course is aimed at physical therapists/physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and assistive technology professionals (including clinicians, assistants, and students). We also welcome recreation therapists, athletic trainers, nurses, physicians, and any other healthcare professionals interested in mastering this subject.
