Introduction

Cerebral palsy can affect multiple body systems, from the neuromuscular system to the integumentary, cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, urinary, gastrointestinal and sensory systems. These multisystem effects can profoundly impact a child's function, overall health and well-being. As healthcare professionals, we must recognise these impacts and design therapy plans that accommodate specific challenges. Where possible, we must work with other team members to address each system and optimise overall function. This introductory course explores some of the complex, multisystem impacts of cerebral palsy and associated conditions.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the overall impact of cerebral palsy on various body systems, including the neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, urinary and gastrointestinal systems
  • identify basic rehabilitation strategies that can be used to help address the multisystem effects of cerebral palsy, focusing on the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, integumentary and sensory systems

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
