Introduction
Spinal cord injuries are commonly seen following disasters and conflicts. They are associated with a high risk of complications due to delayed transfer to specialist centres, especially in low resource settings where pre-existing spinal cord injury services are often minimal. This course examines the assessment and treatment considerations for people with spinal cord injuries and highlights some of the common complications seen in disaster and conflict settings.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- discuss the primary complications following a spinal cord injury in a disaster and conflict zone
- correctly select basic demographical, incidence and injury mechanisms for spinal cord injury in disaster and conflict areas
- explain which clinical and functional outcome measures to use with patients with spinal cord injury
- plan the basic rehabilitation and discharge for a patient with spinal cord injury
Target audience
This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
