Introduction

Chronic pain can impact many different aspects of a child's life, including their mental and physical health and their school career. Specific factors can affect how an individual responds to pain, including their genetics, personality traits and physical, emotional and cognitive loads. Identifying the factors that may be contributing to a child's pain can make treatment more effective. This course provides an overview of chronic pain in young people and introduces pain science education.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • explain the impact that chronic pain can have on children
  • discuss three factors that can contribute to chronic pain in children
  • describe the four pillars of health and how they may affect a child's ability to deal with chronic pain
  • discuss pain science education and its role as an intervention for chronic pain in children

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

Practicalities

  • Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style.
