This course is part of a programme:

Introduction

Following the initial phase of post-operative ACL rehabilitation, designing a longer-term rehabilitation plan can be challenging. A good understanding of existing deficits, functional and sport-specific needs, and realistic timeframes are key to creating an effective plan. This course discusses the phases of ACL rehabilitation, highlighting important clinical goals and considerations for a safe return to sport. Topics include the nine phases of rehabilitation following ACL reconstruction, setting realistic timeframes, criteria for progressing between phases, and selecting appropriate exercise parameters for each phase.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss at least three post-operative ACL protection strategies and the physiological rationale behind each
  • describe the goals of each of the nine phases of long-term ACL rehabilitation, including the key criteria required for progression between phases
  • design an exercise programme for a given ACL case presentation, taking into consideration the nine phases of rehabilitation, appropriate exercise selection, and the relevant parameters of sets, repetitions, load, and rest periods for each phase
