Introduction

Rehabilitation effectively treats diverse health conditions across life spans, reducing recovery time and enhancing functioning. Supporting work and community participation is essential for universal health coverage. One in three people needs rehabilitation, yet global access remains inadequate. Primary care integration could transform millions of lives while reducing costs. This course introduces the role of rehabilitation at the primary care level. It explores the benefits and types of services that can be provided, before providing simple implementation strategies.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the key characteristics of primary healthcare and primary care and the operational context of primary care
  • discuss the role of rehabilitation in primary care, focusing on its benefits, who can provide care and the types of services provided
  • identify at least five simple strategies to implement rehabilitation services into primary care, including using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and specific communication strategies

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
