Introduction

Significant progress has been made in the field of injury prevention over the last few years. However, there is still a gap between research and the implementation of injury prevention programmes in the real world and the burden of sports-related injuries remains high. Physiotherapists are often part of the team responsible for implementing injury prevention strategies. In this course, Lee Herrington explores the modifiable risk factors that physiotherapists can address. He also discusses evidence-based assessment and ways to successfully implement injury prevention programmes.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify four risk factors that physiotherapists can address to prevent injury
  • choose an appropriate test to assess dynamic balance in athletes
  • discuss the evidence for proprioceptive, strength and movement skill interventions to prevent injury
  • describe how physiotherapists can successfully implement injury prevention programmes
  • design an appropriate evidence-based injury prevention programme for an athlete at risk of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury
