Introduction

The cerebrum is the largest anatomical area of the human brain. Its major functions include controlling voluntary movements of the body, sensation, memory, emotions, and executive functioning. The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the cerebrum. It represents the grey matter of the cerebrum and is involved in many functions, including motor function, planning and organisation, personality, processing sensory information and language. By understanding the function and processing power of the cerebral cortex, rehabilitation professionals will be better able to interact and effectively manipulate cues and motor input during therapeutic interventions.

This course provides an introduction to the cerebrum and cerebral cortex and discusses clinical syndromes associated with various regions of the cerebral cortex.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the key features of the anatomy and function of the cerebrum and cerebral cortex
  • compare the basic functions of the four lobes and two hidden lobes of the cerebrum

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
