Introduction
Physical activity is a first-line treatment for chronic pain, yet many people who live with pain remain inactive. Knowing that exercise helps is rarely enough on its own: effective prescription depends on understanding what movement means to each person, addressing fear and unhelpful beliefs, and building a therapeutic relationship that supports change over time. This course covers the evidence for physical activity in chronic pain, why exercise helps, and strategies to get people moving.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- explain the key mechanisms through which physical activity helps modulate chronic pain
- categorise psychological, social, and environmental barriers to physical activity in people with chronic pain, including fear of movement, low self-efficacy, and unhelpful clinical communication
- describe a person-centred approach to physical activity prescription for people with chronic pain
Target audience
This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
