Introduction

The loss of a lower limb has severe implications for a person’s mobility, and ability to perform activities of daily living. This negatively impacts on a person's participation and integration into society. Prosthetic rehabilitation is a complex task that ideally requires input from an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team. This is the third course in a series and will cover all the aspects of pre-prosthetic rehabilitation and what therapists should know about prosthetics. You will learn more about outcome measures, pre-fitting physiotherapy management techniques, including bed mobility and transfers, stump/residuum management, musculoskeletal considerations and patient education. You will also be introduced to the different kinds of prostheses available, their component parts, fabrication and fitting.

Aims

The aim of this course is to expand your knowledge of the pre-prosthetic rehabilitation phase and outcome measures as well as give you an overview of prosthetics and how they influence rehabilitation.

Outline

This course is made up of videos, reading, forum posts and a final quiz. The course content is split into the following sections:

  1. Pre-Fitting Management
  2. Outcome Measures
  3. Lower Limb Prosthetics

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

Practicalities

Availability - this course is online and can be completed on your own schedule.

Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 4.5-5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.

Types of Activities - Watching videos, reading, a final quiz and participating in an international discussion forum.

Certificates - At the end of the course, when you have completed all of the required elements, you will be able to download a certificate of completion and 4.4 Plus points will be added to your personalised learning dashboard.

Requirements to complete this course

In order to complete this course and receive a course completion certificate plus CEUs/CCUs/CPD points you will need to:

  4. Pass a final quiz with a score of 80% or more.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the 6 components of pre-prosthetic rehabilitation
  • list at least 5 education points regarding residual limb and skin care
  • explain the selection of outcome measures with a patient with limb loss
  • explain the role of the physiotherapist with regards to pre-prosthetic rehabilitation and prosthetics
  • compare pressure-sensitive to pressure-tolerant areas
  • explain prosthetic factors that will influence therapy with regards to sockets, suspension, alignment and prosthetic components
