Introduction

The spinal cord is the information highway on which sensory and motor impulses travel between the central and peripheral nervous systems. Along with this relay role between the brain and periphery, the spinal cord provides separate neural circuits for many of our automatic reflexes. Spinal cord injury can be a life-changing medical diagnosis, and it is paramount for rehabilitation professionals to understand the impact that damage and neurological lesions can have on a patient’s functional ability.

This course overviews the neuroanatomy and function of the spinal cord and discusses common clinical presentations of spinal cord injury or lesion.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the basic anatomy and key functions of the spinal cord
• compare the basic anatomy and major roles of the various spinal cord tracts and pathways
• identify the clinical presentations of at least two forms of spinal cord injury

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

We expect the required elements to take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style.
