Introduction

Amputations are common in both disasters and conflicts, but they occur for different reasons. In disasters, limb amputation often occurs as a result of crush injuries, while in conflicts they are generally weapon-related injuries. This course explores the general indications for amputation and highlights the assessment and treatment considerations pre- and post-amputation. It also covers common complications in disaster and conflict settings.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• identify important characteristics about different causes of amputations
• explain the decision-making factors and the impact on rehabilitation of different amputation surgical procedures
• list the primary objectives for assessment and management during the pre-amputation, post-amputation and pre-prosthetic phase
• discuss the complications associated with amputations in disasters and conflicts
• choose the correct early rehabilitation interventions for a patient with an amputation in disasters and conflicts

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
