Introduction

Between the ages of 7 and 24 months, infants and toddlers use their hands in various ways to learn about their physical environment. As they move through this period, their skills become more refined, and they use a variety of hand grasps to manipulate and interact with objects. This course will discuss two important concepts to keep in mind when considering the development of hand function. It also explores how infants use these methods to engage with objects and interact socially with caregivers.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe hand function and specific grasps in infants and toddlers aged 7 to 24 months
  • discuss cascades in development and perception-action loops in infants and toddlers aged 7 to 24 months
  • discuss three ways infants and toddlers aged 7 to 24 months interact with objects using their hands

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

We expect the required elements to take around 1.5-2 hours depending on your schedule and learning style.
