Introduction
Burn wound injuries place a critical economic burden on healthcare infrastructures worldwide. They are also associated with high mortality rates due to severe complications. Infection is the most common complication in burn wound injuries. Therefore, prompt and precise diagnosis is critical for this patient population to prevent detrimental consequences and optimise healing outcomes. This course will overview signs and symptoms of infection, give insight into the physiological response to burn wound injury, and provide practical guidelines for infection mitigation and prevention.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- describe the International Wound Infection Institute Wound Infection Continuum (IWII-WIC) and how it can be applied to clinical wound practice
- describe the sources of infection in burn wounds and how infection affects healing
- discuss the local and systemic physiological responses to a burn wound injury
- discuss infection prevention and mitagation techniques
Target audience
This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
