Introduction
Between the ages of 7 and 24 months, infants and toddlers use their hands in various ways to learn about their physical environment. As they move through this period, their skills become more refined, and they use a variety of hand grasps to manipulate and interact with objects. This course will discuss two important concepts to keep in mind when considering the development of hand function. It also explores how infants use these methods to engage with objects and interact socially with caregivers.
Aims
The general aim of this course is to provide an overview of how infants learn to use their hands to interact with people, surfaces and objects they encounter in their environment in ever more complex way. A second aim is to provide an introduction to way in which repeated experience and of large amounts of time-distributed, variable practice allows infants and toddlers to build a rich set of sensorimotor representations to support performing goal directed action.

Target audience
This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
