Introduction

Attention, or the ability to focus, is a catalyst for learning. It is a cognitive process that requires a state of mental alertness. Once in a focused state, our mind can concentrate, and we can acquire information and learn. Learning requires us to focus on the tasks or details that matter. However, much of our study takes place in environments that do not support the focused attention that is necessary to learn. But with the right tools and strategies, we can enhance our focus and optimise our learning experience. This course explores the various forms of attention, distractions that can derail learning and strategies to enhance focus.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify at least one feature of deep and shallow work, multi-tasking, continuous partial attention and a flow state
  • describe at least two types of attention
  • identify the three main sources of distraction and at least five strategies to enhance focus while learning
