Introduction

Remembering is a complex cognitive process. In order to memorise something, we must periodically repeat the information that needs to be remembered. Students are expected to memorise, learn and master vast amounts of new information. While this information is usually presented in varied and engaging ways, students often feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they have to work through. They must decide which information to retain from a never-ending stream of facts. Moreover, teachers tend to assume that students know how to learn, but in reality, a lot of students resort to ineffective learning and study techniques. This course discusses a few simple principles to help students remember more of what they learn.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • differentiate between short-term memory and long-term memory
  • describe the key steps in how we form memories
  • identify two techniques students commonly use to remember what they learn and four strategies to help them remember more
