Introduction
Male urinary incontinence can significantly impact a person's quality of life and can contribute to social isolation, work absenteeism, and depression. It can also have a major emotional impact on the individual's spouse, partner or care provider. For men living with urinary incontinence, medication is often the first or only option provided by the healthcare system. Men's health physiotherapy can offer proactive treatments to improve a person's continence through individualised treatment programmes and behavioural modification. This course, the fifth in an eight-part series, will review the physiology of the micturition cycle, explore the different types of urinary incontinence, and discuss physiotherapy assessment and treatment strategies to positively affect the quality of life for this patient population.
Aims
This course aims to introduce key concepts of male urinary incontinence, discuss efficient care delivery using the biopsychosocial model, and introduce the reader to physiotherapy assessment and treatment interventions for this diagnosis.
