Introduction

Many families feel unsure about placing their infant in prone. These feelings can stem from fear and confusion about the purpose of wakeful tummy time. It is, therefore, important that rehabilitation professionals understand the benefits of supervised wakeful prone positioning on the physical, cognitive, and social development of infants. This course provides an overview of these benefits for typically developing infants from birth to crawling.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe typical infant responses to prone positioning from the newborn stage to crawling
  • discuss movement patterns and skills seen in typically developing infants
  • discuss the benefits of the back-to-sleep campaign and the use of tummy time on infant development

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers.
