How do I manage my forum notifications?

Getting notifications

When someone is talking directly to you – by replying to you, quoting your post, mentioning your @username, or even linking to your post – a blue number will immediately appear over your profile picture at the top right.

Click your profile image to scroll through all your notifications. The ‘unread’ ones will be highlighted and appear at the top of the list, and you can also use the subsections on the right to filter to certain notification types (eg. Likes, Messages, Bookmarks, etc). You can also mark any as read by ‘dismissing’ them using the dismiss button (which also works in combination with the subsections, so you can, for example, clear your Like notifications but keep your Bookmarks.

When you have been sent a Personal Message you will receive it in your Inbox and a green envelope will appear over your profile picture instead (these will take priority over regular notifications).

You can optionally receive all these notifications as push notifications. Simply allow the site to send you notifications through your browser when it asks permission.

Don’t worry about missing a reply — you’ll be emailed any notifications that arrive when you are away.

If you want, you can get notified about other things happening on the site as well, either at the category or topic level.


Topic notifications

You can change your notification level for any individual topic via the notification control at the bottom of each topic:


or at the end of the timeline on the right of the topic, if the topic is long:

You can opt out of all the Plus discussion forum topics simply by clicking on your profile picture on the right hand side of the forum header (1), then clicking on Profile (2) and Preferences (3). Then go to Notifications, select Never and click the Save Changes button.


Category notifications

Notification level can also be set per category. To change any of these defaults, see your user preferences, or visit the category page, and use the notification control above the topic list, on the right side:


Notification emails

You can manage the notification emails by clicking on your profile picture on the right hand side of the forum header, then clicking on Profile and Preferences. This will open a new screen where you have to click on Emails (1), then select your preferences (2) and Save Changes (3).


Categories and Tag tracking

Go to your user Preferences > Tracking, select your preferences and click on the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page:

Whether you’re on a category or tag on which you have set a notification setting, you can change it by clicking the bell icon next to the New Topic button.


Note that you can also pause notifications by clicking on your profile picture on the right hand side of the forum header, then clicking on Profile and Pause notifications.
